Yes, it's absolutely true. Do a search, there are writeups on exactly what your trying to do.

Do your self a favor and drop the tank the right way and clean it out before you put in the new pump. You do not want all the crudd getting into the new pump.

Its not hard to drop the tank. Not trying to turn this into a "why you shouldnt cut a hole" topic. Because yes it will work, and yes you can finish the hole off nice and have a nice "hatch" to access the tank.

But its not hard to drop the tank. If you have it mostly empty, which you should, it wont be heavy. And its a good time to check the condition of your lines, and rear suspension parts since you have to move some of them out of the way.

Just an option... couple of ramps and some hand tools is all you need.

I'm debating whether or not to drop the tank verses cutting the hole. I wanted to know if that write-up in the sticky applies to verts also...not just the hatchbacks...

Fuel tanks are the same, mounting is the same, so I would assum you could. Just where you cut it might be alittle different. I just took a vert apart for a donar car. And I used the tank and all...same as the hardtop/t-top cars as far as I could tell. Just watch what you cut, because I seem to remember seeing some extra bracing in that area where the top folds down.

im not lazy or anything like that. i just think it would be nice to have that hole right there , say i ever have a fuel pump problem i could open my hatch and get it quick. my car has very low miles and i had it on the lift to do my headers and clutch and i inspected every thing under the car and its in awsome shape its like right of the showroom floor.

2002/Black/SS made this post that has pictures of his install doing this. I personally would not want to do this to my vehicle but here it is.
