Default Problem With Gas Gauge

Its been about 100 miles since I filled my tank with gas, yet when i got in my car yesterday and started it up, the gas gauge read full, in fact the needle was pegged all the way to the right. As i drove the needle moved up to between full and three-quarters full. After leaving my car sit at work for a few hours i came back out and when i started my car this time the gauge was reading between half and three quarters full, right where it should be. However as i drove the needle moved back towards the full mark. WTF?????????? Any ideas???????

Damn it man you just beat me to it my T/A is doing the exact same thing! Before I filled her up it was doing eratic readings every time I would turn of the car (from full to half to 2/3) After I filled it up now it doesn't move from the full mark and it's been like more than 100 miles

Would the sending unit be inside of the tank? Quick I don't think it's the cold weather because I live in hot-*** Miami (89F)

It's something in the gas tank. I had this happen to a 97 Jimmy I had. The dealer tore the whole car apart, replaced the sending unit and everything but it was in the tank. I can't remember exactly what is is. There's some kind of floating device in your tank that tells the levels. Hope this kind of helps.

Huh, I didn't realize that this was such an epidemic. I'm just hoping that this is a problem with the guage and not a symptom of something more serious (expensive). I'm holding out hope that maybe its just the unbelievably cold weather reaking havoc yet again on my car. Another thing I noticed, on my car at least, is that the volts gauge is also reading a bit off from what it normally does. Its almost on the line between the 13 and the 18. Normally the needle chills out somwhere just after the halfway line. I have no idea how the two could be connected, but the gauges are right next to one another. Ugh

Yes, the sending unit is in the tank, along with the floaty thing. I talked to a guy today that used to be a chevy mechanic and now has his own shop. He said that it might be a problem with the main computer. Mucho dinero to do anything with the sending unit, i guess dropping the gas tank on these cars is a major bitch. A dealer is going to charge you upwards of 1000 bucks to do anything like that cause i guess its pretty much an all day job. I'll let you know what this guy says if i get my car over there sometime soon.

Probably won't go and see the guy for a few weeks cause I'm going down to florida for spring break Sucks having something on your car not working right, but just as long as its not a serious thing I'll be more than happy to just keep as eye on the mileage, rather then pay the huge cost of fixing it.
