Default Cranking prob's. I Think?

Maybe something, maybe nothing. I'll ask anyway.
My daily driver has 89K on it.
Normally, i turn the key & it fires right up.
Recently (this week) it has started cranking for approx. 2-3 seconds before firing up.
New fuel filter & plugs have about 10K on them.
Fuel pump going out maybe? Injectors?
what do you think? Something/Nothing?
Thanks, Matt. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
What would you try? I'm open..........

its possible......when you crank, do you just turn the key on and crank (one motion) or do you turn the key on....let the "dings" (tone) finish and then crank?

My guess would be perhaps the fuel is draining back out of the system while the engine is off (pump is off). There is supposed to be a check valve to prevent this but it could have become stuck open or damaged over time.

Do you have a pressure gauge on the fuel system. After you turn the key off, pressure should remain in the system for at least a half hour or so (will blead down very slowly).

Chris. Thanks for your response.
in response to your feedback, i have tried it both ways. Turning over(one motion) & waiting for the chimes to go off.
No FP guage.
If i remember correctly, you can normally hear the fuel pump when you turn the key.
I cannot hear the fuel pump motor running?!
& if i have to crank the car longer than 2 or 3 seconds i can smell the fuel "promong" the system.?
This is not every time however.
It is isolated. certeinly don't want to be left stranded. Car runs great BTW.
Thanks again Chris.

some times I can hear my pump and some times I can't.....that seems to deal with pressure inside the tank or the amount of fuel in there.

If your smelling fuel, then your definately getting fuel to the engine.

hmmm....next thing to look at is the ignition system. How old are the plugs? You might go to Napa and get a set of plugs (I use the Champion Copper plugs.....cheap, work quite well, etc...) for about $1 a piece. I change my plugs every 10,000 miles. Also check your plug wires on an ohm meter to make sure they are all good (trying everything I can think of....).

Once you do that, crank it (get it running) and get AutoTap out and see if everything looks ok (LTrims and 02 voltage.....). Perhaps something is out of tune <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> .

Did you change anything before this started happening?

If not, try jamming a screw driver in one of the plug wires and put it close to a metal part of the engine. Have someone crank it and check the spark. It should jump the gap and be a very bright blue flame. If no spark or a really weak looking flame, you may have a crank sensor problem.

Let us know.
