Help with freinds car
A freind of mine has a 88 mustang with a fuel injected motor. The problem is the car will not start unless you spray starter fluid/carb cleaner into the intake. Then it will run fine. Without spraying it it will just crank and crank? What would cause this. I know it is a mustang and we all hate them but I want to help him fix it so I can blow his doors off!

sound like an ignition problem, or water in the gas, whats that product that they use on marine engines to fix that its called like liquid heat or something, its supposed to help burn the water or something of that nature.

I would say either the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump took a dump. Once you introduced the starter fluid it would run. So you know you have good ignition. Hook a fuel pressure gauge up to the rail and see if you have pressure. It might even be a bad fuse or relay. The relay that controls the fuel pump is under the drivers seat. Also check the fuel pump saftey switch and make sure its not tripped (in the hatch under a black plastic plug). Just push it in if its popped out. I had one all through high school and college. Great cars for the money and easy to mod.

The car has new gas and a good fuel pump. The car will run after you spray(almost like priming the throtle body)with starter fluid and then you can drive it around all day long. Just dont stall at a stop light! If the fuel filter was cloged why would it run after spraying it???

You first need to verify the pump is priming when you turn the key. You can pull the Schrader valve from the fuel rail & see if fuel squirts out when you turn the key to on. If so, it is not likely a fuel issue.
I have seen a few Fords that the ignition switch fails & it will not get ignition power when the key is turned to start, but will in the run position. They will run, but not start.... just like yours. Check voltage at the coil at key on & at start & see if that is your problem.
