Default Need help with 99+ walbro install...

I searched and found nothing... which strikes me as odd..

Is there a trick to removing the stock pump? For the life of me I can't pull it out. :-/

Also.. when re-installing the new walbro pump.. are you guys cutting vent holes in the bottom of the assembly at all or anything? I figure if I cut a hole in there, I might lose fuel on hard launches.

Here is a thread with pics of a dual setup in a '99+ tank

Here is a thread with a single setup in a '99+ tank.

Hope that helps some

Use a screw driver pry up the tabs and get a hammer tap on screw driver and spin the metal lock ring then pull it out be careful not to bend the float. Cut the bottom of the baffle out the walbro pump is smaller than the factory one i used a piece of radiator hose cut a piece long as the pump and cut about half inch down the side use that like a spacer then get fuel line run from pump to top where the factory one goes splice two wires together that is if you have a single pump dont worry about the smaller line dont need it.

only thing I would add is be careful when you do the internal fuel line from the pump (inside the tank)......I over tightened the band clamp on my hose, thus cutting the hose and it blew out after a day of driving. Then I had to take everything back apart to fix it (not cool... ).

If you go slow and don't rush (screw up), its a pretty easy job.

Ok.... basic rundown for those who find this thread from search..

Hammer tap the silver ring that holds on teh fuel pump assembly to the tank off..
Gently remove fuel pump assembly and be careful not to bend fuel level sender arm..

Remove fuel level sending unit from assembly
Push in 2 side clips to remove casing from bottom of assembly..
Fuel pump is now exposed. fuel pump goes UPward out of the rubber sock.
Cut away old plastic tube..
Insert walbro and put on fuel hose, tighten, etc. etc...
splice wires..
careful put back casing on..
put on fuel level sending thingy..
gently reistanll assembly

I did not cut up my assembly.. for the reason being when I launch, I don't want my gas slushing away from my filter sock... I think an intact casing will alow some buffer room for rough launches and such. *i hope*

solder the wires after you splice them, and use heat shrink on them.
The search seems to be messed up, I've been having problems with it also.

How important is it to solder and heat shrink?

I used a regular tube splice that was very tight at the ends.

Well.. I didn't cut out the bottom and now I have unsteady fuel PSI at WOT. I'm going to cut the bottom out now.. perhaps that will cure it.

I didn't solder the connections.. I did use small tube splice.. worked like a charm, no explosion.

Ok... I didn't want to cut the whole bottom out for hard launches, so what I did instead was remove that little rubber baffle at the bottom... and cut out the little X that held it in.. and removed the other sock filter/assembly which left a nice 3/4" hole...

Fuel pressure is solid for straight line....

with a 1/4 tank of gas though, on turns fuel PSI dips.. is that normal? You guys get this too? I assume we all do with walbro's due to the fuel sloshing to one side of the tank.

The stock pump didn't have this problem because it would keep itself submerged in fuel.. a nice little resevior.

This is ridiculous... even in a straight line after a good pull the psi dips crazy to 30PSI.. Before with the tank-in-a-tank pump setup I could run the car almost to empty with no problem..

And if you think about it.. with the bottom cut out a little bit, and you're low on fuel.. when you take a turn and all the fuel sloshes to one side.. what is the pump picking up? Nothing.

So you guys have these problems as well? I assume you do but would like verification.

A solution I see could be runnign a tube from the FPR down near the pump pickup inside of the casing.. might help keep the pump from drying itself up.

What do you guys think?

Magnus - Go ahead and cut some holes in the plastic canister. At least one big square in the side so that the Walbro's sock can stick out into the gas tank. If you have the whole thing bottled up in the canister then you are most likely fuel starving the pump. I have hacked mine to bits and have had ZERO problems with fuel feed. Good luck.

I did cut a few holes but perhaps they aren't large enough...

I put the pump at the stock pumps level... which as i thought over the night.. IS WRONG.. THe stock pump is at the bottom end of the tank-in-a-tank... the stock pump has a pickup that pulls fuel from the very bottom of the tank...

If you set your walbro at the stock pumps height, you still have perhaps 3/4 of an inch left to the bottom of the tank.

Tonight I will drop the tank again, cut a hole in the bottom of the assembly and slide the fuel filter through that so the sock is on the bottom end of the housing, not inside. This should put it at the lowest point possible.
