Possibly the sending unit in the tank. I bought a used bucket assembly for a double pump system and a couple of the tiny tabs on the resistor part were missing. I guess its a possibility.

I also think the fluxuating gas guage is caused by those little metal tabs on the level sender. I have replaced a couple in different GM vehicles with this issue.

bringing this back from the dead because I have having this same issue. I have an aftermarket fuel pump installed(previous owner) and like the OP said, my guage is also all over no matter how much gas is in it. i have the same exact issue as OP. The previous owner cut a trap door to get to it so I dont have to drop tank but if anyone can help me out please this is driving me nuts!!

It is likely the level sensor card or wiper finger contacts. A float travels up and down with the level of gas and causes the wiper fingers to sweep across a resistor card which results in varying ohm resistance readings to be sent to the fuel gauge. The resistor card with get film on it, corrode, smear; or the contacts with break off/get bent, and you will lose the electrical contact between the resistor card and wiper fingers. You can either buy a replacement level sensor assembly to retrofit onto your existing fuel sender assembly, or just buy a whole new one with new pump and everything to drop in. Knowing you have an aftermarket sender assembly, there is no telling what level sensor assembly will retrofit to it...so I would just buy a whole new pump module assembly

so we had the whole unit out today and when we manually move the float with our hands my gas guage works again. we put it back in tank and it didnt work again so we tapped ontop of the sensors and its working again. we shall see how long that lasts. now when we were looking at the resistor card and the fingers on the tabs it looked like one tab had 3 fingers and the other tab only has 2 fingers it looked like it was either bent down or missing?

Your sensor is bad... a missing wiper says it all.

I'm having the same problem in a 98 trans am. Whats the fix? Sending unit or a whole fuel pump module? Assuming the sensor prongs being broken cause this, is that part available seperately from the module assembly? thank you!
