inline fuel filter near tank?

inline fuel filter near tank? btw, we have a stock v6 camaro...
we've noticed the car giving off a gas smell, and after further inspection found that the filter (or w/e it is) near the gas tank was giving off a faint spray of gas. our problem is we dont know how to get it off. we think we may have already broken it, but we are stuck as we cant get it back on, or all the way off. does anyone know how to remove it, or can you show me a diagram of the filter and the fuel lines.

The filter is a small "can" with a threaded line on the end toward the engine, and quick-connect fitting on the end toward the tank. You need a quick-connect tool to release it.
Mine was stuck on there pretty good. When I finally got the line to release, I pulled it too far and kinked the nylon line on the tank side. (like trying to open a stubborn bag of chips and suddenly it lets go and chips go flying all over...)
