Default E85 vs regular gas

How much cheaper does E85 have to be, compaired to regular gas, before you start saving money?

Multiply the price by .30 and add it to the price and see if its higher or lower than the price of regular gas. Typically fuel consumption goes up 30% with E85 which is why I say that.

another thing I have been wondering is does the stock fuel system needs to be upgraded? I know that I would need bigger injectors and a tune. I have read that some people say E85 will wreck the stock fuel system and others say that they haven't had a problem. Does anyone know the truth? I am thinking about switching to E85 in about a year.

Thanks

I'm still running my 1st tank though my truck (non flex fuel) and no problems so far. I haven't been able to find any hard proof that anyone has had any fuel system problems running E85 in non flex fuel vehicles. Usually its the opposite, and the fuel system is actually cleaner.

thats why you havent noticed anything. it might not be right away, it might not happen at all, but e85 has some corrosive properties that require different seals/tubing

Yeah, if your seals/tubing are made of non-synthetic rubber, cork or aluminum! So unless your car is older than about pre-1995 I don't think you have much to worry about.

To the original poster...check out this link for an easy E85 calculator on whether it's worth the cost of using it over gas. http://e85prices.com/milesperdollar.htm

e85 in my ram 2004, 92 toyota paseo, (goes 360miles on a tank of 87 and 360 on E85) also my cub cadet lawn tractor. E85 is about as corrosive as gas

Your fuel economy will be less and E85 in my area costs almost as much as 93 octane. It's still over $3.00 a gallon.

Price wise I don't think it is worth it.

That's awesome. What did you have to do to your paseo and tractor to run on E85? I'd love to run my corolla and lawn mower on it...

i had to go down to the pump and get it, lol jk, no mods were done to the mower or car. just fill and go. started as 1 gal e85 to the rest gas, then 50/50% mix, then all out. actually i dont see a decrease in mileage with the toyota. the ram i beat on so mileage is always low.

in my 87 iroc with tpi i've gone through 2 tanks of 50/50 mix of e85 and 89 (which already has ethanol added) and no problems. this tank is stronger about 9.5 gallons e85 and 3 of the 89 ethanol stuff. car finally runs smooth, feels as strong, and runs cooler. can't really gauge the fuel economy since speedometer is currently inop
