Default fuel pump install question

i am installing a walbro 255 in a 98 tank. the factory style straw pickup that went to the old pump is still intact, so i planned on using it. however, on the factory pump it was very tight with no clamps holding it on. my question is, will the small worm clamps that came with the walbro hold the plastic straw tube on the pump even at high pressures? or do i need to get a thicker rubber type hose?

i just dont want to blow my fuel hose off and have to drop the tank again.

thanks.

I've always used 3/8" rubber fuel hose on my walbro pumps attached with worm clamps. Don't tighten down the clamps too much or they'll weaken the rubber over time. Just tighten them down enough so that the hose doesn't slip off when you pull the hose. What model of pump are you using? Do you plan on replacing your fuel strainer? If you're using a GSS-340 (large pump inlet hole) you'll need to use a fuel strainer (sock) for a 5.0 Mustang fuel pump. The dealer wants over $50 for a replacement. If you're using a GSS-342 (small pump inlet hole) you can use a fuel strainer for a '96-'00 Honda Civic.

its the GSS340 and i got it from New Era. the kit came with a sock that fit on the walbro so thats what i am using. it doesnt have the return port on the sock but it should be able to work properly just returning to the tank.

one more question, how necessary is it to upgrade the wiring to the pump? i dont think i will be maxing it out or anything so fuel volume shouldnt be a problem. i just dont want my pump to burn out in a few months. and can this be done with just a direct alternator lead, ground, and a relay?

thanks btw.

You could always get a hotwire kit or make your own. I just rewired mine using some 14 gauge wire. I've never had a problem with walbro pumps on factory wiring...that was on 4 cylinder FI cars though.
