fuel level sender compatability Is a fuel level sender from a '00 LS1 F-body compatable with the gauge on a 96 F-body?

Also, the sending unit for a '00 car has the same size fittings for the supply and return lines... They are different sizes on a 96 car. Is this only a difference with the plastic lines that connect the sending unit to the metal hard lines?
I know they are physically different... I'm trying to adapt an aftermarket tank that requires a 98+ fuel sending unit. The tank has a sump, so the inline pump will be drawing fuel through that. I picked up a '00 LS1 sending unit to be compatable with the tank. My question is if the fuel level sensor itself puts out the same signal as the older cars? i.e. will it run a stock '96 gauge.
My question about the lines is because I would like to run the fuel return through the sending unit and keep the stock type lines in place. As far as I know... All the cars used metal hard lines with plastic line at either end to connect to the rails and the tank. With 98+ cars, does the return lines rear plastic section have two different size connectors? i.e. at the metal to plastic connection, is the quick connect fitting physically smaller than the one at the sending unit?
I have looked at a 98 car under the hood, and the supply and return lines are obviously two different sizes... Just cant get a look at the rear section due to the location of the car.
