Hi All I put some gears in about 500miles ago they sound good under 50 mph and above 60mph i'm a little close to my heel if I were to move it a couple thousand will the howl go away or ?
my back lash was .007 is it to late to change .

Nope, get used to it, and if you race it, it will get louder.

 

What brand and step gear are you running a 5 or a 2..Had a similar problem with a 4.10 from SLP and had to tighten the backlash up to .004 they wanted between .003-.006...I usually run motives around .010-.011 with no problems at all but everyones final machining process is a little different. I see no reason why you have to let it howl you will just have to get it where its happy. Got any pics of the pattern on it??

 

the gears recomend .008-.012 i'm on the tight side but I fig it would loosing up over time, the howl is not that bad just in the 50-60 mph mostly at 55 but I was wondering is it to late to change it because it wearing in a pattern.

 

No,it's not too late to change it.It would be the same as setting up a USED gear set.
You're laying on too thick of a coat of marking compound and it's masking the true pattern.

 

ok there is hope my pinion shim was .028 I'm going to try .026 or .025 and check markings & backlash

 

mine do the same thing..it gets annoying sometimes, but u can adjust to the noise

 

Exactly what I was gonna suggest, Pattern may be a few thousands deep and make sure the backlash is around .008 to .010.

my richmond gears are loud as hell at times!

 

when do they make noises? my car makes a noise sometimes when im driving and my foot is on the gas pedal also if i put my foot on the pedal with hardly any force i can still hear it

 

when cruising around 50mph its more nosiey but if you get on the gas more then the noise get Less.

 

If your unable to get the noise to go away you might want to run a thicker gear oil. It helps.

 

kinda looks to me like the pinion is riding a little deep in the housing...Are you running a crush sleeve or a solid pinion spacer? I would get a solid pinon spacer before I tore into it again if I didn't already have on to elimate the most failure prone piece of the whole rearend the crush sleeve. Then I would reinstall the pinion with anywhere from a .030-.032 shim set and run another pattern. Should move it in to the ring gear just a bit that will put less end stress on the pinion and open up the backlash just a bit as well to probably around .010

 

I have a solid pinion spacer. I'm going to check and see what size shims I have also i'm going to put new axle bearings and pinion bearings my carrier bearings are about 4 yrs old so i'll prob get thoses to.

 

new pinion bearings will move the pinion depth as no bearing obviously is exactly the same I have seen them move the pinion as much as .003 into the ring gear. Make sure you keep what numbers you have right now so you can put it in where you want to try it when you change the bearings out. Sounds like you got it under control though. Glad to see you tossed the crush sleeve

ok i pulled the gears out and i'm replacing my axle bearing they look ok but after 200,000 miles I fig just do it, next my pinion bearings look good no marks so i'm not replacing them but my carrier bearing had some marks on them so I went and bought some but the only ones I found was apc economy have anybody used them?

I already installed them on my carrier so I guess i put it back together also I was thinking of getting some grade 8 bolts would it help or just keep the stock bolts on?
