That is frickin sweet but looks kind odd with the front tire not being lipped like that also.

You can only narrow it x amount without changing the rim offset without minitubbing the car, but if offset isn't a concern because you are buying new rims, I would narrow it so that you can run a common offset wheel, like a 5.5 backspace or whatever so that your rim choices are better.

If you narrow a stock width rearend 3" a side, how wide is the housing from flange to flange? (The flange that the brake backing plate bolts to)

Probably about ain inch, every car is a little different, but any more then that and you're stock wheel aren't gonna fit, hell you're gonna be beating the wheel well by the lower control arm even doing it an inch I bet.
