Default Does this pattern look too deep?

I know this pattern is all messed up. It has a .034 pinion shim and when I checked the backlash it was almost .014 which is way too much. I had a mechanic install them but I want to re do them.

Yes, that is too deep. .034 sounds like alot. I would try to get the lash to around .008

AAM says to shoot for .004 on the backlash but should I try something like a .028 pinion shim?

This is with the .028 shim and just about .004 backlash.

The pattern was pretty close with the .034 pinion shim, just the back lash was way off. The .026 shim is way too little, the coast pattern is way off. Retry the .034 shim or maybe an .033 with the back lash between .004-.006in.

ok, I'll retry the .034 and see what it looks like. I just got done sticking a .021 in and setting the lash to .006 and the contact area was like a little half moon at the top of the tooth on the drive side. Now the strange part is that the coast side looks better..

Good stuff there.
I failed to mention the pattern on 2 cut gears looks nothing like the more conventional pattern on 5 cut gears. 2 cut has that more slanted pattern and are more of a bitch to setup.

God I love my 9".

yea I know the pattern I need but damn! it's almost impossible to get it there. I'm gunna try the .030 pinion shim and see what that looks like.

Setting up gears in anything OTHER than a 9" is aggravating as Hell.

You have to truck on till its right. I have set up gears say for example with .020" shim and the pattern was fair. Changed to .022" and holy crap what an improvment. Add another .002" and it fizzles out again.

The pattern can wake up very quickly with even minor changes to depth or BL adjustment. But rest assured it WILL appear correctly, once you have it dialed in.

ok well I put the .034 back in the pinion and the backlash is set a little loose .007 AAM wants .004.. The pattern to me looks pretty good and centered but kinda deep in my opinion. I need to take the backlash in but I fear it will go deeper. My .028 shim I had was over to the side of the tooth not like I wanted. How do ya think this pattern looks?

I dont like this at all. Pattern is deep in the root of the tooth.

I think the .026 looked better. Ideally you want the pattern centered on both sides (heel to toe). However it is fine to have the drive side a bit more toe heavy. This actually makes for a stronger setup with sometimes a tad more noise.

Try .024" shim.

I agree that it's too deep. A buddy said he thinks he may have a .025 so I'll try that tonight.

Its off, but I would tighten the backlash down to .004 and recheck the pattern. It wont go deeper but it will move it towards the toe. Do this before changing the pinion shim nearly .010, thats a large change.

well I tried that and it still looked too deep. So I pulled the pinion and tried a .032 and it looks a little better but I think I'll try a .030

Small changes are the way to go at this point, I think you're headed in the right direction, just don't give up

Look what I got in my garage. This is the secret to setting up ring and pinions:
