so even with all of that play, am I supposed to loosen the bolts and push the bearing cups back .. that just doesnt seem right. I measured my stock universal and with the bearing cups pushed all the way in, they would be just about flush on each side of the yoke when installed. My guess is that this is the wrong universal?

Everything is through Bob at EPP. I bought the PST driveshaft and explained what I had, how it was a stock 10 bolt etc. The ds came with the wrong universal, so I told him and he sent another out free of charge. This one still looks to be the wrong one? I told bob that the bearing cups were the wrong size.. thats when he sent me another universal, now the bearing cup size is correct but this looks to be the wrong size universal.

There is a ridge on the inside of stock 10 bolt yoke that the cups fit up to if they are flush to outside of the yoke I am really suprised they have not come out. They should be about a 1/8 in on the yoke. Remove the drive shaft and take a good look at it you will see the ridge they fit up against. If you keep running it like that you will most likely sling the cups out.

Doesn't look like there are tabs on the pinion yoke for holding the caps in place. Are there grooves on those caps for the C-clips? I have seen some pinion yokes that didn't have the little tabs for keeping the caps pushed in. Had to use c-clips on the caps such that the c-clips were "inside" the pinion yoke. Bear in mind these pinion yokes were true and flat on the inside such that a c-clip on the u-joint cap registered flat against the inside of the yoke. Works just fine, can be done without pulling the driveshaft back out.
Dunno, thought I would say something.

Ok did some checking on orignal 10 bolt out of my car also stock shaft. The 12 bolt I installed had the ridge on yoke my bad. The stock 10 bolt has clips on the inside of caps on u-joint In the photo can not tell if the caps on your u-joint has the groove for the clips If not it will be the wrong joint if it does have groove they should have been in the box with new u-joint just install them they will be a c shape clip. Have not messed with to many stock f-body rearends either 9 inch, dana 60 or 12 bolts over the last year and had forgotten the correct style Sorry about that.

ok here we go. I inspected the u joint.. And i forgot the snap rings, I took off the bearing cups and they are still in great cond, i barely ran the car at all so im glad nothing is wrong. But there seems to be a problem, i took the snap rings off of my old bearing cups.. put them on the new.. this thing is so damn tight!, it didnt pop in place easily, i think one snap ring is so tight that it is down to half the size.. Pictures soon. I just cant get a break. How hard is it to tell someone what i need, supply everything.. and it all just bolt in. I didnt get any snap rings with the universal so i didnt think hmm what is this for.. Its the first driveshaft install i've done, and its gone downhill.

Out side Distance of the "clips" should be 2.566 It looks like there is a lot of grease in that dude try wiping some of the excess out of it.
Also make sure no needle bearings are laying down.
Some of the new U-joints are a little tight (and they should be)
Put a C- clamp on it for a bit then get all the rust of your yoke, put a little grease on the yoke and draw it in.

welp I had to take off the cups in order to inspect the needle bearings and also put the snap rings on .. im pretty sure I checked the needle bearings but that doesnt mean one fell down by accident and i didnt notice.
