Default 9" OR 12 bolt question...

I am not considering fabbing a 9" or 12 bolt I was just curious. Everyone talks about making their own 9" or whatever but that making the torque mount is damn near impossible. I saw those "z bars" and with those it seems like you would eliminate the torque arm. That would alleviate the major hurdle of fabbing your own t/a mount wouldn't it? I searched and couldn't really find anything about it. Just that you are supposed to leave the factory t/a incase you broke a z bar. I figured if they were built solid and fully welded then it would be as safe as having the stock torque arm? Am I mistaken?
