I always clearance the ring gear, as it's a much stronger way of doing it. Just keep the heat down/go slow and do it in a manner where the particles won't go in the diff and mess with things - most noteably between shims and bearings.
The only reason tolerances open/loosen up, is they were setup wrong in the first place. So to think you'd go with .006" because it would break in or loosen up, is a mistake and not a good way of doing it.
The beam style inch pound torque wrenches can be had pretty cheap at bike shops.
