bad gears?
had a question guys, i went to put gears in and i cannot get them to pattern out. either the coast side pattern is sharp and horrible or the drive side is. on top of that i can't get the pattern to move down away from the face of the ring gear. do i have a bad cut gear or what? they were new yukon gears just wondering if i should send em back or keep jacking with them. I have moved pinion depth up from .029 to .035 in .001 intervals and down to .016 in .001 intervals, and moved backlash around from .003 to .010.

What ratio did you have before and what did you go to? I am not a fan of Yukon as they are made in India but you may have a carrier issue. Let me know what you got, I will see if I can help.

What I was getting at is finding out if you have good judgement on what the pattern should look like. Thats the main problem I have.
I've set up a few different types of rears, even other 7.5's but the last 7.5 I set up with motives was the biggest pain.
On that one I just started writing things down and noting how close the pattern looked with different shim combinations. About the time I tried everything I could, I just put the shims in that got it the closest and went with it.
It turned out good.
The only thing I can think of is to be sure you have the same exact backlash and pinion preload for each pinion shim change.
I'm not sure what you mean by ring gear face.
Maybe we can look at this chart and you can post what you have so everyone is using the same terminology.

If it's got high contact, put in a thicker pinion shim. Then you'll probably have to move the ring gear to the left. Write it all down, the shim sizes, what the pattern looked like, etc. Don't loose track, you can refer to your notes if it starts going in the wrong direction.

well i went with the best pattern finally got it to the center of the tooth on the ring gear put it together and everything seems to be alright. not much noise about the same as the stock 2.73's so i'll put a few miles on and check the wear pattern
