Default GEARS and pinoin angle

ok. so my friend changed his gears in his 99 trans am. and they were sat right. and his torque arm pinion angle before the change was sat at -2. and he didnt check it after he did the gears. just put it back.

now 150 miles later and about 4 days. his gears are starting to whine again. someone told him that if the pinion angle isnt "perfect" it iwll destroy the gears again. so lets say freak setup and his pinion angle is -4 or -1. will either of those destory the gears or new pinion bearing?

hell will the pionion angle destroy the bearing?

thanks

oh and if it wont then what would be the thing that is making is whine again?

I don't think it's going to make the gears wine. Time to pull it back apart and check the pattern and backlash again... What brand of gears are they?

Agree with JimsWS6. However, if the pinion angle is way off, it can eat your u-joint bearings in a hurry. Watch for that if you start getting vibration.

pinion angle has nothing to do with the gear install,,

i would say someone messed up the gear install

(maybe a bearing or race not pressed on all the way, the most common thing i see when re-doing someones messed up ring and pinion job is that when they knock out the old pinion races from the housing they actually create a high spot from the chissel or punch they use when pounding out the races. i use a small grinding stone on a dremmel tool to remove the high spots so that the bearing races can be driven all the way into the housing)

was proper break in done on the ring and pinion

what are all the specs from the installer, pinion bearing pre-load, backlash, carrier bearing pre-load??
