Smile Driving the spool on the street!!

Well, I know have about 10 passes, and prob close to 1,000 street miles on with my spool.
It is not bad at all.. still havent driven on my street tires, But on my Hoosiers, the car is fine. the only real time i feel it is going slow and turning SHARP!
other then that it is fine. I dont know if i would put one in my 300 hp work/snow/rain/grociery getter/race car, But I would recomend the high hp drivin in good-fair weather/toy/race car/fun car to get one in place of the 12 bolt posi unit.
Just for what its worth to those scared about it. It aint so bad,and it is about 15-20 lbs lighter (rotating mass at that!)

My spool is on order. Stupid posi kept me from running at the Southern Shootout. First and only pass... One wheel peel, and a hard lurch on launch. Fortunately nothing broke.

I rode in Fireball's car after he first put one in. He did a parking lot maneuver and noise was enough that I thought he left half of the rear on the street.

There great for the track but on the street, it will break something sooner or later.

Axles dont like being treated like torsion bars.

The ring pinion & spool dont like forces those loads create.

It's like the old welded up spiders.

the car is getting better to drive. I dont find it that bad, and worst case it cost $300 for new axles evey couple years. atleast your not Blowing Up every piece in it!!!!

Like i said if i drove the car all day everyday, i wouldnt do it, But for a daily toy it isnt bad.
I drive my car between 50 and 500 Miles each week depending on work, weather and I have a Harley,72 chevy pick up, and a 21' boat. so it is a daily toy.
Spool+power should = holding up!
Its not all bad.
It does make some noise's tho!

It's good to hear you are happy with the spool.
I recently talked to Strange about going with the spool. They said it will take more power but don't recommend the street driving,,ie hard cornering due to the loads on the axles. The problem is the axle doesn't bend,it breaks and there is a chance of the wheel flying..So I'll see how my rear handle's 600+hp next year.

I see your point
The only real option I've seen is a 9inch with a locker, but then you have the obnoxious noise

I probably would never recommend it to anyone but I have driven several cars (a couple almost daily years back) with spools. The axles dont twist much, the car does though. The tires slipping and screeching on a tight corner can get a little annoying..

Cant say I ever broke anything in the rear directly related to street driving the car but I'm sure it cost a few axle bearings here and there and some stress on the axles. I'm sure most rear end sellers wont recommend it for a liability issue, things can get a little wild in the rain. They are cheap/light and if I had a weekend cruiser/high horsepower M6 car and I killed a couple posi units it would have spool..

I just drove my car yesterday for the first time since the Moser 12 w/spool and TH400 were installed. It is a bit of a weird feeling pulling it out of the garage. Its like your dragging the brakes on a slow sharp reverse or forward turn.

But I took it out to the street, loaded up the transbrake and gave it hell. Money well spent!!

The only time it really gets annoying is on street tires in the rain. For whatever reason the tires skip twice as much in the rain when you are going slow. But that's just slow cornering, other than that there is nothing wrong with a spool, it's fine. And I might be wrong here but if normal corning with a spool broke one of my 33 spline axles I would be pissed. I can't see there being anywhere near enough pressure on them to make one break.

That's because the tire loose the grip nessacary to twist the axle.
The inside tire is keep the same speed as the outside tire.

Yes, slow sharp you feel it, other then that it is fine.
I think berings are more likely to fail not axles.
Congrats on the Money well spent. That is always a good thing!!!
