Default Realistic Rear-End

My rear-end is making a noise. I assume carrier or pinion bearing. That being said, can I put some gears in (3.73, it's an A4) and be HAPPY with it? Doing gears will include a full rear-end bearing swap etc.

Happy is defined as a rear that won't break on me.

My Trans Am has 57k on the clock, an SLP lid, and will be getting a full exhaust set-up soon. I DOUBT I will see the dragstrip before 2011. That being said, the occasional highway abuse, and burnouts, will my 10-bolt hold up?

I hate having weak points in my stock set-up, but I really do not plan on beating my car. And if it comes down to it, what's the cheapest 12-bolt? Is there a budget build for them?

Let me know, Thanks.

if you have any ideas of taking it to the drag strip id go ahead and purchase one and be done with it it will break, its like a ticking time bomb it could break now later tomorrow or whenever. if you have the money to upgrade now id recommend to do it and not waste any more money on the 10 bolt. here is a link to the cheapest place ive found on rear end setups you can build your own and see what the cost is shipping is free. installation of a 12 bolt isnt that bad either. http://www.tick-performance.com/cata...fbody/rearend/

Thanks for info.

How long will the 10-bolt last as a daily driver? Never over 80mph, never at the dragstrip.

mine lasted until i put a sticky compound tire (nitto 555r drag radial) on the back. its hit and miss ive seen some people race with them and not have a problem but eventually it WILL break. your chances of something going wrong then are greatly reduced if you drive it like you say.

i believe your missing the fact that he has an A4 which is much easier on the 10 bolt than an M6.

to the op: you will be fine and love it.

X2, I know the 10 bolt is a a piece of crap but I personally seen WAY more 10 bolts break from an M6 then A4. I had a friend that had a H/C Spray A4 with a 3.73 and the rear was fine. Cars sold so dont know about now. And then I got my Cousin who broke his 10 bolt with a M6 245 nittos and a lid and cat back 4.10 after about 4 or 5 passes a couple weeks after throwing in the gear. There really is no telling on "how long" it will last but with an A4 you will be fine for a lot longer then a 10 bolt. And if it does break then just buy a 9" or if on a budget pick up someone elses 10 bolt for a hundred bucks untill you can save for a good rear.

Bullshit....I beat the living the **** out of my car on Nittos all day and its fine. I know people cutting 1.5xs/1.4xs spraying 100 shots out of the hole on converters trying to break the 10 bolt and it wont die. The odds that you will lose the rear before the tranny is slim to none, especially with a fresh/competent rebuild. Now, what i dont do is wheel hop the car or do donuts so let me clarify that.

My 10 bolt has so far lasted 177k miles, and I have done many burnouts and 1/4 mile passes with sticky (kinda) tires. It is making some noise though.
