the hub part of the seal goes into the rear and the metal ring rests on the forward most part of the housing as a stopping point for seal placement.

I figured it out-thanks 98silver.
It actually can go in both ways. One way it fits snug in the rear end (right way) and the other way it fits snug onto the yoke before being reinstalled.
I like to do things right one time that's why I asked. I appreciate any positive comments to assist me.

Holly cow! After driving it for a half an hour I hear a POP! and lots of continued grinding. Dropped the car off at the dealer. Any ideas? $$$

Yeah the dealer wanted $2500 to fix it. I am going to tow it to my garage and park it. I have the Auburn unit from the factory (original owner too!) and this is the second time I have had a major porblem with it. The first was shortly after I bought it but was fixed under warranty. $2500! WTF.
Thanks for the advice maybe I will go with a new rear end. Ball park how much?
