For an A4, it's either 2.73 or 3.23.

Look on your drivers side door for the tag with all the RPO codes on it.
You'll either find GU2 or GU5.

GU2 = 2.73 gears
GU5 = 3.23 gears

3.23s will get you out of the hole faster, better for 1/4 mile performance.

2.73s are good for a little bit more high end speed, and better gas mileage, especially on the highway. My car gets 29MPG on the highway.

He lies, lol.
3.42s do come stock with the 6-speed trans, but your A4 car came stock with either 2.73s or 3.23s.

well... according to him, I now have 3.42:1. I do not know where the differential came from, but it has to be LS1 cuz it bolted right up. I took it by the GM dealer to have them alter the computer for the new gear setup, but still seems like I am logging about 1.2 miles every real mile traveled. Anyone else think that I might have actually ended up with 3.23s? Outide of removing the lid, is there a way to check to see what gears are actually in there? Obviously my service sticker on the driver's side door has GU2 (2.73) listed.... thoughts?

GM dealers cannot reprogram for a gear ratio change. All they can do is reflash the PCM with whatever the stock calibration was for a particular VIN. Where did the rear end come from that this guy replaced yours with? You need to provide more details for anyone to help you here.

If the door says GU2, then it definitely came stock with 2.73s.
You say the guy just replaced your rear end.. did he put 3.42s in?
Switching to 3.42s is a good mod actually.. I'm eventually gonna ditch my 2.73s for 3.42s.

if the dealer cannot reprogram the pcm for a gear change... then who can? I know people do not lower their gear ratio and just let the miles rack up and their speedometer not operating correctly. If you went from 2.73 to 3.42, then what do you have to do to get the gauges accurate again?

Either custom tuning, LS1edit, Hypertech programmer or SLP sells a recalibrator. I have no experience with a Predator programmer to know if it will, but I think it would also.

well...... I made them either buy me a hypertech programmer or send me out to get it done at a High Performance shop.... they went with the latter. 150 beans and my computer is recalibrated to kick on my fans cooler, adjust for the 3.42 gears, and reve limiter kicked back to 6500prm. Runs great finally!!
