Damn that sucks I just got the car back together! Ill know more when i pull the cover off tomorrow. well looks like it might be a 12 bolt x mas. I dont know much about the rearend but if something broke why is there no noise and the car can still move

I once took apart a 10 bolt with 8 teeth gone off of the ring gear and 2 gone from the pinion (3.42's in a 3rd gen) and I drove the car home....of course it sounded like a garbage disposal full of gravel being run on 220V or so. But, it was driveable.
However, if you have a hole in the cover, the gear oil should have left as well. No lube means fried bearings, gears and all. I'd say a complete rebuild may be needed (depending on how far it has gone with no oil in it), axle bearings and all.
Good luck, let us know what you find!

There is always that 'remote chance' that your cover had a serious flaw or casting 'bubble' in it. The pressure and heat generated in the rear could have caused this flaw to 'eject'. I know it sounds remote, but once you have pulled the cover AND if you have found no damage to the internals, this may be the culprit....

True, good point, there should be no back pressure; however there will be other 'pressures', ie torque, flex, oil splatter off the ring gear, etc. This was just a wild guess with a very low probability that the cover was defective.......

well the spot that blewout was the thin spot where the cooling vent is. its about the middle of the cover on about 2" left of the center. It was the strangest thing. it was a AAM cast aluminum cover. I dont know exactly what the defect was but i think it was just a crack or an air pocket in ther casting process! since i dont have a camera yet no pics. I think when my garage gets built im gonna hang it on the wall. looks like its time for a TA girdle now

I could never understand why anyone would get the AAM (SLP) cover when the TA girdle does MORE to strengthen the weak 10 bolt and has the drain hole. The only thing that was touted about the AAM was the 'cooling' fin process. Oh well, live and learn I reckon. Oh, and this is all my opinion, but I really like my TA girdle and stud kit over the AAM.....
