do you gain or lose hp when changing gears
i feel stupid for asking this question because i feel i should know and have seen this topic before.
Would you lose hp when changing from 3.42s to 4.10s in your car? and if so, how much on average?

You really don't lose hp; you may lose the ability to apply all of it depending on several variables. What you are really doing (I think) with lower (numerically higher) gear ratios, is you multiply the torque from the motor at an incresed rate, depending on the increase in gearing. Your differential is a torque multiplier: ie 3.42:1 ratio takes 200 ft/lbs torque before the pinion and converts it into 684 ft/lbs of torque after the ring gear. A 4.11:1 ratio would be converting the same 200 ft/lbs to 822 ft/lbs. Applied against the same constants (car weight, internal and external friction, etc, etc), the torque used to move both vehicles will accelerate the one with the 4.11s quicker than the one with the 3.42s.
This may be simplified, but it works for me........until I stand corrected.
