Default Differential bearing or old gears noise

Is there any way to discern if the noise coming out the rear is the differential bearings or the gears going bad. I have 3.23 gears on a 98 Trans Am with 125xxx miles. It whines going down the road at idle as well as at any rev point.

On another note I get a ping noise every time I shift directional gears (From P to anything, from Reverse to drive, from neutral to drive, etc) I believe is the U-joints. I also get a tapping feeling in the gas pedal while accelerating. I dont believe its related but you never know.

What do you guys think?

U joints for sure on that one.

If your rear is making noise at idle then its not the rear. The rear isnt in motion at idle so it couldnt make noise. Now, if you are saying you can let off the gas and coast or shift to nuetral and the car is just rolling and the noise is still present, then yes I would say you have a rear end issue. When did this noise start?

It whines during acceleration and cruising. It also whines while just idleing down the street in drive, not as much though (how I drive through my neighborhood) but I have not shifted it to neutral to see if it still whines.

Do you have any leaks? Have you checked or changed the fluid recently?

that sounds like a bad bearing issue to me. All the gear whine I have heard has been at higher speeds, like 45 mph and over....
