Default 9 Inch or 8.8

I have a 9inch from a 70's truck that I was gonna cut to put in the 99. I got offered a great deal on an 8.8 out of an Explorer. Already has disc brakes and is 59.25 flange to flange. I plan on a DD/weekend drag racer. Trans is a 4L80E. Motor is a stock bottom LS1 with 5.3 heads, LS6 intake, full exhaust and a 150 or 200 shot. Thanks.

Thanks, it promises to be a big one. I was thinking of using the 8.8 since it is already 31 spline and has disc brakes.

explorer has an offset to it. 8.8 out of a mustang is what is ideal.
you could use the explorer axle and weld your axle tubes from a 10 bolt to it.

I wanted a Mustang axle, but the one from the Explorer would be a freebie. I had never thought of welding the tubes on from the 10 bolt. I'll have to measure and see if they are a match.

I have both available, the 9" will need disc brakes and 31 spline axles. 8.8 has 3.73 gears already. 8.8 is a little more efficient, so I was not sure which way to go.

Are the tubes the same diameter on the 10 bolt and the 8.8? What about the axles fitting in the bearings?

do a search for " 8.8 Build ".
Everything you need is in there.
There are two opions listed for using the 8.8 tubes or the ones from a 10-bolt.

I say 8.8. Light and strong, it is a proven rear end time and time. I dont care too much for such a huge rear end that weighs more and bottoms out on my lowered car. I plan on fabricating a kit and selling 8.8 installs with and without a differential. Hopefully this will happen soon
