I got a set of factory 3.42's. I'm not sure if my car came with a 2 or 3 series carrier .... ? Would it be that big of deal to just take them to a shop and have them put in or will the carrier really be necessary ??

No idea that's probably decent with shipping though. I got mine from a friend for making him some decals .... They are low miles and factory gears .... I just need to know if I need get a carrier or if I will be fine putting them in like they are ?

well you could swap out the carrier, or you can get a spacer for the ring gear to make it work with the series 2 carrier

Do you still have the 3.42 gears? How much and how do I know if they will work with my carrier? I have a 98 A4. I'm new here and not sure how this works so you can email me at tony_west76@yahoo.com

I am in Westland so no need to ship if price is tright and they will work.

Does the spacer in the 2 series make it weaker or whine ?

I went from 2.73s to 3.42s and dropped .3 in the 1/4 from three weeks earlier. Adjusting for the DA, however, shows that it was really about a .2 drop.
I may be the only one who likes 2.73s over 3.42s. With numerically lower gears you get more speed at a given RPM and easier freeway cruising, which I like. The only time I really like the steeper gears is at WOT, which I don't do too much unless I'm at the dragstrip (just a few times a year). My Z28 is my daily driver.

i have the dreaded 2.74 gears and am looking to go to 3.42 or 3.73 in my 99. Talked to tech guy at DTS in warren MI about the swap. He said that the aftermarket gears are much more likely to whine due to them being cut a little differently which gives them extra strength. If you want quiet gears you need to go with GM (American Axle) gears. They will install 3.73's (GM) with a new 3 series Truetrac for right around $900. Sounds like a deal to me. My only mods are a flowmaster cat back and a cai.

I had 2.73 gears and just swapped in a 3.42 rear axle out of a 6 speed. Haven't got to drive it yet because i am doing h/c swap right now but i can see where it would make a big differance. My buddy went from 2.73-3.73 and it seems to launch really hard but haven't got any track times on his do to other issue's that have come up.
