Default 3.42s

Anybody on here go from 2.73s to 3.42s .... ? I'm considering doing 3.42s instead of 3.73s because I can get a good deal on a set .... Would I need anything other than just the gears and is it really worth it to swap for 3.42s in your opinion ? Thanks

Hey there, my car was originally a 2.73 car! I chose 3.42 gears because I didnt want 3.73 gears! I have american axle gears, and there was a spacer put in to make it work! I love my 3.42 gears they are quiet and really complement my stall! I say yes go with 3.42 gears! I have whipped many 3.23 and 3.73 geared cars!

i went to 3.42's and it really woke the car up but i liked my 3.73's better unfortunately that rear blew the pinion gear and is waiting a rebuild

I went from 2.73's to 3.42's and it was one of the best mods I've done to my car. I like them better than 3.73's because of lower rpms at freeway cruise.

I bought a used R&P set on here - they are cheap and plentiful. I had a new take-out 3 series carrier to install them with, though. If you don't have one, you'll have to buy aftermarket "thick" gears or use a spacer to make your 2 series carrier work.

Ring gear spacers will work but not very desirable due to the fact it eliminates the ring gear centering pilot on the carrier case to offset the ring gear to pinion distance.

How you make a 3.42 3 series work on a 2 series carrier is a 'spacer',DON'T DO IT !!!.
Do it the right way,Either buy a 2 series 3.42 for your 2 series carrier OR get a 3 series carrier for those 3.42 gears.

Went from 2.73s to 3.42s and its was night and day for the car. I have an A4 so its like putting 4.10s on a stick and I will say that it is the best mod I did to wake the car up after the H/C.

Heck I had 3.08 and went to 3.42 and it was a noticeable difference (I changed whole rears though, so I went from a series 2 to a series 3 carrier). Going from 2.73 to 3.42 would be a nice jump I'd think.

It would def be a noticeable change. If it were me, I would spend the $$$ on 3.73's

I went from 2.73's to 3.42's also mainly because of the freeway driving I do. I called Jaws Gear and they hooked me up on the Ring and Pinon and install kit. They are great people to deal with.

Ive done that in the past and loved it, noticed a difference in acceleration no doubt. Usually ive always supplied the shop with the gears and the rest they took care of. Ive never had any issues doing it that way and ive done gear changes 6 times in the past since ive had 5 camaro's over the years, broke a set of 4.10's on my 01 SS other then that never had any issues.

If it was me personally I would spend the cash on the 3.73s but each to his own. If ur a 6 speed the 6th gear would make up for those few hundred extra revs on the highway and city mileage might improve.
