difference between 9" and 12 bolt?? Sorry guys i don't know much about rear ends but i'm trying to learn. What i was wanting to know is, what's the difference between a ford 9" and a 12 bolt? Are they the same thing or? I just see that alot of guys go with a ford 9" because they are so much stronger and i was wondering what options there are for upgrading the factory rear end.

They are totally different as far as design.
Instead of removing the cover on the back of the rear end to do gear changes, the entire center section of a 9" is removed from the front.
Racers like to use 9" rears because they can easily swap between gear ratios by swaping out the center sections.
Google both of them, and it will be very apparent why they are different after you see some pictures.
