Default Rear end oil change

Im currently changing out my clutch and i was wanting to change my gear oil. Is there any major draw backs to changing the gear oil cold opposed to hot as long as you clean all guts with break cleaner while covers off????? Also i have a stock rearend in my 2000 z28 and have read about a gm additive for limited slip but dont know how much to add and when during the oil change(saw the small bottles they come in). Also what gear oil should i go with(i read somewhere it take 3.5 qts.)

If you can answer any off the questions above it would be a real help... Knowledge is power.. Thanks in advance

If you haven't had a rear end problem, then I wouldn't bother with the brake cleaner. Just wipe the case out as best you can, and then refill it. Hot or cold doesn't matter. Add one bottle of the limited slip additive. The easy way to do it is to partially empty a bottle of gear oil, then pour the additive in that bottle and pump it in with the rest of the oil. I'd recommend a 75w-140 synthetic gear oil.

thats what i thought.. i read that default is 75w-90.. what kinda of benefit does 75w-140 carry opposed to 75w-90(if i am correct about the stock oil)

The greater viscosity index makes it handle temperature extremes better.

ok new problem... got 2 gts of mobile 1 75w-90 (req's 1.5 qts) but was told by the guy that i might not have to add additive with this synthetic blend, was going to pick up additive but was some cheap off brand that o'reillys carrys wanted something with a name behind it. any addvice.... can i run with just the mobile 1 or do i need to get the gm additive from the local dealer.
