Default need some help with this one guys.

so i was replacing my axle bearings. i have an 02 ss. there is a diff that uses worm gears i believe and i think this is the torsen rear end? correct me if im wrong. but the peice that slides in the diff to sepeate the side gears seems a little loose. is this a normal situation? the reason i ask is because ive been trying to find a popping noise that seems to be coming from the rear end and i just cant find anything. you can hear it popping at low speeds like 5 to 25. and it doesnt matter if your turning or going straight. i dont seem to hear it if i take a hard turn. any ideas?

its bugging the crap out of me.

thanks!

The thrust plate fits a little loose. If you are talking about what sounds like a rattle, it's fairly common with the torsens. I haven't heard of a solution, I put the GM posi additive in mine for grins to try to stop it and it worked for a few weeks.

ok but are the wheel in the rear supposed to have play in them? kinda like when your checking for wheel bearings up front. because i jacked my car up and grabbed the top and bottom and pulled and pushed and i can move the wheel a little. is this normal?

Yes. The axle will move out to the limit of the C clip and in to the limit of the plate but that's not what is causing your rattle. I believe it is gears in the torsen with "normal" play but that's a guess.

If you've got the cover off, remove the 8mm holding the thrust plate and remove the plate, remove the caliper bracket and ABS sensor, push the axle in, remove the C clip and remove the axle. Check the axle surface and bearing for wear.

ok so while i was driving i found that it seems to make the noise only when coasting. and when ever i put it in gear and put a load on it that the sort of popping, ticking noise goes away. buts its kinda hard to tell for sure due to exhaust. no one has had this problem before?
