Axle problems and replacement questions
Ok,
I have a 2002 Formula with traction control and I am having some issues. I started to get some nasty rear end noise so I had my axle bearings replaced at work (ntb). When we removed the axles we noticed they were scared some and they have nicks in them. So I bought the best "repair" bearings I could get through NAPA and installed them. All seemed well at first and they seemed to fit ok.
Drove it a bit and the noise was gone, but they are both leaking. I am hesitant to try these POS bearings again since the seals are obviously junk on them. They also stick out some and made the c clips very hard to get in. Which means they will be even harder to remove. So I have been on the hunt for some axles or other suggestions.
The only direct replacement axles I can find are either from the dealer or from Moser. The Moser ones are 300$ a pair, but they do not include the ABS ring. How would I go about removing the ring from my stock axles to install on these? Wholesale price from the dealer is 240$ each and I cannot afford that.
Summary: Axles are messed up, repair bearings didn't work, how are the Moser replacement axles? And how do I remove the ABS ring off the factory axles to install on the Moser axles. Also how much damage is to much damage on the factory axles?

I called the local junk yards just now and they said no...they didn't even look or check anything. They are really pathetic... I have access to a press, but I have no idea how you would get something in between there to press the ring off.

The problem is you can't use these bearings on 4 channel rears with torsen differentials.
The reason is the torsen has thicker side gears, the 4 channel axles have wider flanges.
The seals are damaged when the axle is forced into the seal to get the c clip to go in.
These bearings work fine on rears that allow the axle to move in further.
If you think the installation was fun, wait til you try to get the c clips out.
I had to take a punch and big hammer to break the iron bearing spacer out.
The reason junkyards are short to say no is because they usually don't want to ruin a $300+ rear end sale to part it out for a $50-$100 axle.

Ah makes since I guess. When did have to force the c clip in...
We are going to drill the c clips out. I bought brand new GM axles from ebay and new clips as well.

FWIW I got my axle repair bearings at Autozone. I just took them back after running them (and leaking) and told the guy at the counter that they don't fit right and got a refund. I cleaned them up first.

I will get a refund on mine for sure. Well, actually the work will be getting redone for free. I work at NTB and I didn't feel like doing the swap in my driveway so I had it done at work. After I get my new axles in I will be getting everything redone for free.
Ended up finding new OE axles on ebay for 324$ a pair. I really didn't want to drop that kind of cash on a POS 10 bolt, but I had no choice. Still better than 240$ each wholesale from the dealer.

**** when I got my MWC 9" I tried to give my 4 channel axles away which were in great shape and I couldn't find anybody that needed them so I tossed them. If the seals are leaking get some OEM seals from GM, I put a new set in my 10 bolt one time and never had a problem, they sealed great and no more leaks.

Problem is he installed Axle Saver Bearings. Those things are junk! I think of those like a bandaid, temporary fix for a long term problem. Let me know if you need a set of axles. Oh, and yes rings are pressed on and can be pulled off by any machine shop.
