Default WTF is this top "port"?

Starting preping my rear end for paint today (still in the car) and came across this long plastic "plug" sticking out of the top of passinger side of the differential. It's about an inch long, oddly shaped, and it pulls right out with your fingers. I don't believe it's a fill port, which I believe is located below the horizontal fin on the passenger side. Can anybody tell me what this is?

I can get pictures on in a bit if need be.

Haven't painted it yet (not my rear end pictured above), just masked everything off today and did rust remover/converter on the whole rear end and panhard rod. Have to wait 3 days before I can paint it w/aerosol, the bottle says

I have been taking a lot of pictures, I'll post up a thread on it

Others have confirmed, it is a vent port, thank you.

It vents!!! duh!! LOL..

Your gears/gear oil get hot, so the vent brings the pressure to atmosphere inside the rear end.

Yep.

Careful, if you overfill the rear, you can get a nice oily blast out that vent all over the bottom of the car. Ask me how I know. Hey, rustproofing, right?

Scotchbrite pads and screwdrivers/files to remove any big flakes, "sand" it down a little with the scotch rites to get it loosened up, clean with soap and water and dry w/ a towel, then apply the rust remover.

Some put a nipple in the hole and add several feet of fuel hose to it with the vent on the end of the hose and attach it to a crossmember higher than the rear end. Put a loop in the hose and you won't have any drips or vapors on your newly painted housing.
