Backlash reading or contact pattern?

Backlash reading or contact pattern?
What if the gear pattern looks correct but backlash is out of spec?
The gear pattern looks good on my new gears, but the backlash is measuring out at .015. Everwhere I look says that the backlash should be .005-.009.
My understanding is that the gear pattern is the most critical setting and that backlash is one of two measurements in getting the pattern right. The other setting being the pinion depth. Is this right?

Reshim the carrier bearings to get the proper backlash. Do not run it with the backlash at that setting. Everywhere you have looked showing back lash is correct, I'd set it aout about 0.006"
The most important setting is pinion depth. Once you get that correct, the rest is easy. Gear pattern is dependent on both the pinion depth and backlash, with pinion depth being really the MAJOR contributor to a proper gear pattern.

On my 94 Z28 my 10 Bolt's back lash was set up @.014. Needless to say I broke it after 3 months with the new Strange 3.73's. I put some GM OEM 3.73's from SLP & set the back lash @.006 and drove the car for a year without a problem with the rear. Alot of track passes as well. IMO, .006 is perfect.
