Question Moser 9" from spool to posi question

I just installed my moser 9" with a spool and 31 spline axles. After reading and posting about posi vs. spool I choose the spool. Now my car is a daily driver and I take it to the track on slicks with nitrous. After a few days of driving I've come to the conclusion that I need a posi. So I'm thinking about buying another center section to run on the street and swop out when I go to the track. Which is only a few times a year. What posi will work with Nitto drag radials and nitrous on the street? I've found a couple of center sections on e-bay that have been rebuilt with posi and set up for 31 spline axles. Just want to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot and buy a posi that will not work.

Thanks

What don't you like about the spool?

I am currently running a 31 spline Tractech soft locker. It's noticeable when it locks and unlocks if you don't have a front swaybar on the car...

I think some posis are not rebuildable. I had one, I think it was an Auburn and it was rebuildable but I forget what brand it was.

I think Ford, Eaton and Auburn make posi units for the 9". I am looking at the Ford traction lock posi unit. I hear they are better than the Auburn and similar to the Eaton. I think you can rebuild them, but I'm not positive.

You want the Detroit TruTrac. It has gears instead of clutches, just like the Torsen.

Everyday driving has me making alot of sharp slow turns. So the wheel hop and the car jerking around is hard to handle. I'm curently waiting on a new rear sway bar. Will a sway bar take out some of the jerking around?

Thanks for the help.

Maybe a little, but not much.

it is posts like this that make me think the spool although stronger/lighter/cheaper might not be the best way to go for me either since I do put 8k on the car in the summer.

now I need more $$ for a locker

I don't want a locker. A friend of mine has one in is 2000 TA. Everytime he goes to shift it unlocks then locks back the jerks left or right. The other night he was racing a guy using nitrous and when he shifted the locker would make the car jerk hard to oneside. I thought we were going lose control. So I'm going to posi for the street and run my spool section at the track only.

I'm still trying to find the best posi.

Thanks

The Auburn Pro series is a joke. Mine is worthless on the track. It will not even turn the left rear over in the water if I have slicks on. This is a brand new one I am talking about. The only reason I still have it is because the first posi unit I got from Auburn was gone before it even made it to the track, and they replaced it under warranty. It is ok on the street though.

What don't you like about the Truetrac? That's the only posi I would even consider in a 9".

CB99, yup, it's very noticeable with a stick car.

Even when I was A4 it was noticeable you can't just throw the car around any more.

Amen on the Auburn Pro series being Junk
My Moser 9" came with one in it, and was doing one tire fires in the water box the first trip to the track. Then it started to clunk and bang during slow, sharp turns in parking lots etc. Auburn themselves admit that they don't recommend the Posi for drag racing. Of course I found this out after the fact.

I went searching for a better way to go. I talked to a couple of guys who had run the Trac Loks in their Buick GN cars @ about the 10.5 e.t. level, and they said that it tried to put them into the wall a couple of times. Apparently would not lock up consistently on both sides and was very unpredictable. That was all it took to convince me to man up and go for the full Detroit Locker. I have it in my car now, waiting for my 422 Super Stroker w/Darton MID sleeves to be done and installed. My hope is the D. Locker will live under 500 plus RWHP and a 200/300 shot later on.

So far, the streetability of the D. Locker is not that bad. I mean if you're a serious drag racer. I wouldn't want to turn a wife or g/f loose in it the way it clicks around corners and clunks when locking and unlocking. I have gotten used to it, and even gotten used to the stares from people in shopping centers, gas stations, etc. Never fails to attract some jaw dropping stares from people (especially women) who hear that noise and do a double take. They must think the car is about to fall apart and they want to watch the wheels come off. (one of my friends even had a track official flag him down as he drove around the water box one street racer night) The volunteer official had never heard a locker and questioned my friend about the condition of his T/A M6.

Depends on the person and how much noise they can put up with around town, but I really love the idea of not ever doing a one tire fire again, and hopefully having a rear end that will last a good long time. I also changed to a CF drive shaft, and that reduced a lot of vibration from the BMR Xtreme TQ Arm at highway speeds. Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

That's some great info, I'm about to order my 9", But I think I will go with the spool, I rarely drive the car, only to and from the track and occasional joyrides.
