Runnin' a spool
Who here runs a spool in the street. Opinions?Love/hate? Is it streetable? My car only gets driven about 1000-2000 miles a year now. Just trying to decide if a spool will work for me.

If your driving is mostly rural and highway like mine is, the only time you'll really notice you have a spool is when turning in intersections. I've never had a problem in the rain either, you just have to be a little more cautious. Bob

We put a spool in a 864 rwhp CTS-V we built at the old shop several years ago, the customer has put quite a few miles on it without any problems. Bob

Lockers can be a real hassle on the street as they don't always unlock each axle at the exact same time. This can cause the back of the car to wander around. The first time I ever experienced this, I stopped the car and got out and made sure the rear was still bolted into the car. Lockers have more backlash too, meaning you can twist the driveshaft back and forth about half a turn. This can cause manual transmissions to grind going when changing gears at part throttle. Bob

Lockers:
Significantly more expensive.
More moving parts
Heavier
The tire wear issue is insignificant, most people who put in a spool are going to be doing other things that are much harder on tires than turning with a spool.
One real issue, if you have to push your car around by hand, out on to the street, staging lanes at the track, into the garage... you will only be able to push straight ahead or back, even with two people pushing, slicks make it even harder.

I daily drive a car with one. The main problem I have is tires if u plan on having drag radials. Plan on buying new ones every month. Without ever spinning the tires mine lasted a month and a half. Mickeys that is. So I just put regular street tires on. Lasted about 5 months. They just wear right down the middle. And to be honest the uturns drive me nuts lol. But seeig as u only drive it 1-2k miles should be just fine

Slicks make it easier actually. most people who are running slicks have 15" wheels and at least a 28" tire theres alot of give in the sidewalls of slicks as compared to a 17" wheel with at 24-26" tall tire. Not sure where u got that info but one person can push a 2600 lb drag car with a spool and 34" slicks around corners in and out of the shop no problem.

No spool here yet, but on my 12 Bolt from Moser, I have a messed up Tru-Crap diff that is locked and had been acting like a Spool for a few years. Aside from Excessive tire wear, I have had no issues.
Other then its a PITA to push and turning at the same time, if I could not drive it.

Keep in mind a spool can play havoc on your traction control.
In my own personal car a spool is the only choice, for the same reasons many have posted. You buy it and your done, no concerns with it breaking or going bad. Do a full spool though do not do a mini spool, mini spools have been known to break. Of course anything can break under extreme conditions.
I do not recommend a spool to everyone though and there is alternative choices out there that can be chosen based off your own personal needs.
