Default 10 bolt help

So my rear end has been whining since I bought it, about 16000km ago or 10k miles, and i have been looking for rear ends but their even more money up here. Anyways a local guy to me is selling his old 10 bolt, with the ta cover and Torsen T2-R for a reasonable price, that needs to have the backing plates pressed on as he used his on his new MWC 9inch. The only problem is that it is a 4 channel rear end while my car is a 3 channel. i was wondering if I would be able to use his internals in my housing, and my backing plates on the axles, along with pressing on my reluctor ring so that I could keep abs? My car is an auto and have bought parts before from this guy and I have been told the rear is fine, just upgraded when he went 444ci. Any thoughts on the matter especially from people that have done the same would be appreciated.

what gears are in your rear end now? If you are going to stay with a 10-bolt I would just recommend rebuilding yours. You can get a bearing kit for like $100 and then just have a transmission shop or someone you trust install it. This is just the route I would go.... so you dont go to all the trouble of getting that to fit and then it starts whining 10k miles later.

X2

I put new bearings (pinion only) in mine myself and its been fine. get the whole kit, to be on the safe side, and have someone reliable install it. no need to replace the whole rear.

I havent taken the cover off yet, but I believe most of whats in there is going to be shot due to the clanking noises and loud whining, when coming off the highway you can hear a repetitive clang as I slow down. The cost of a new carrier and gears would be way more then id spend on this other rear, which is why I wanted to put it in mine, or I was thinking of using an abs delete kit and just running the 4 channel.

Thanks, I had already looked at that but maybe my question wasnt clear. Can i use my reluctor gear for abs on the torsen r diff? Also if i drill it out, would I need to take out the gears? And if I had the tubes welded all the way around would I need to take out the gears, and re set it up, as my father is a welder.

yes,you can use your ABS reluctor ring on the torsen carrier. much care must be exercised in removing and re-installing the ring as they can break. I've done it and have yet to break a ring, but there are threads about broken rings.
Also,a 2 series(2.73) ring is different than a 3 series(3.23 & 3.42) ring,2 different GM part numbers. 2 series is 26014607;3 series is 26029185.
drilling out for the sensor,I would remove the carrier(mark caps as they should be re-installed in same position) unless you have some way of guaranteeing that no chips enter the not removed parts,it is a 13/16 smoothbore hole you have to machine in.
welding the tubes I can't comment on as no experience with that.

Too bad you weren't closer to me as I'd make you a smoking deal on my 10 bolt I just removed today. 3 channel already plus 4.10 GM gears and looks to be in great shape. There is a leak at the pinion so that would need attention.

Thank you for the info FirstYrLs1Z, will have to figure out what my carrier is. i was wondering if someone could help me on my other issue I am having. Every time from a stop, when I hit the gas I get a banging sound near what I think is the back of the transmission. Ive checked the torque arm mount and transmission mount, both didnt look cracked, so I am stumped at what would be giving me the noise. Any thoughts?
