Where are my M6 10 bolt 3.90 gear guys at???
I've used the search function and haven't found a ton of usefull info of guys installing 3.90s in a stock 10 bolt so I've decided to ask here and maybe help others too.
My M6 '00 TA has 414 RWHP and I am still running 3.42. The car sees 1500 baby miles a yr that's it. No hard launches no track runs, just the occasional *** kicking on the highway and streets but even that is rare. I have a great powerband from 2500 on up with my PRC heads and TR224 cam setup, but would like to get into that powerband quicker, only occasionally do I go above 5500 RPMs. Most of my driving is in the 2000-5000 RPM range and I really do notice that it takes some time to get into the powerband since I've been driving the car for 10 yrs. Now I've read tons of threads where people say that 3.73s aren't a big enough jump and that 4.10s are a blast in M6 cars but that you shift alot more, 1st gear is useless and steet tires go up in smoke.
As for the 3.90s, most of the research I did shows guys with 9 inch rears running 3.90s but there is not a ton of info where guys are running Motive Performance 3.90s in a stock 10 bolt. Also I know alot of people say don't waste your $$$ on the stock 10 bolt but again, I don't drive the car hard I don't run it on the track and she only sees 1500 miles a yr.
Are 3.90s a solid compromise in between 3.73 and 4.10 in my situation? Anybody running them?? Also I noticed there are several diff install kits running from $40 to $100 I am guessing the $100 with new bearings crush sleeve etc etc would be best? Anything else that would be recomended while doing the gear install if I decide to go through with it?
Thanks for time and help

You sound like me. I am pushing similar power numbers and have 3.90's in the stock rear. Small whine around 40-45 mph but not too bad. I can still get 25 mph highway. Very pleased with them as an upgrade over stock and still not too much to roast the tires on take off but giving much everyday fun.

3.90s seem like the perfect compromise! Jawsgears sponsor on here has them on sale for $189 + master install kit at $110 is this all I would need for gear install??? Anything else I am missing here? $300 sounds awesome to make the car much more fun to drive. I linke dboth below are they the right parts and what I would need?

OK just talked to guys over at Jawsgears and looks like for the gears and install kit it will be $290ish + shipping. I asked if there's anything else he would recommend doing while in there and he said that's it but that for $32 some guys get a new axle bearing and seal kit and do that as well. Anyone recommend that?

Tha's comforting to hear! Did you go with the motives? Orange box? What install kit and was the install kit you only needed? I'm not concerned with gas mileage I only bring the car out on sunny days less then 2000 miles a yr total. Any cons that make you want the 3.42s back?
Congrats on the purchase of your I'm sure you'll like them!

I've got very similar desires and power levels, though I do road race on occasion. I was quoted almost $1000 to put in some 3.90 gears and bearings ect... Seemed way too much and a third of the cost of a new, better rear end.
Please update us on the total cost, gear whine and performance difference. thx!

I had my Motive 3.90's installed back in April (`10). I see no drawbacks except for the slight whine and even that's liveable. RPM in all gears at speed only went up about 200, Nice gain in acceleration and virtually no change in fuel mileage.

I have been seeing alot of people keeping there 10 bolts lately. How do you guys think 390's in a 10 bolt will hold up in a 600rwhp car. Cant realy see downing the 10 bolt since it has not failed me yet. And i do drive the car hard whenever possible. Yes I do street race!! sorry for partial hijack op!!
