Moser 9" is screaming at me
Alright so I bought a used Moser 9" off a member here about 2 months ago. He assured me it was good to go and only had 6k miles on it. He said that he had a "certified" Mechanic who specializes in gears and axles inspect it, and check the pattern and he said it was in great shape.. I took his word for it because we spoke on the phone and he has over 200 positive itrader ratings. Anyways I finally got my car going and right away, first drive, this thing is so freaking loud! It's an ear piercing whine. Top of third and up sounds like a freight train is barreling down on me! It gets louder the faster you go and as soon as you let off the gas it goes away. I was told it has 31 spline axles, 3.50 gear, and an auburn limited slip. So I guess my question is, Is this normal? I know some gear sets are louder than others but idk what this has in it. Some insight would be appreciated. Thanks,
-Sean

You used a good brand! The question was more of a way to determine You indeed put in the necessary oil without sounding like an accusation.
You might pull the drain plug and get a sample of the oil from the face of the plug to see if there are metal grindings on it.
How much backlash is there at the pinion?

No they are all Poly bushed.
Ah I see. That is a good idea. So are there any set-ups that are normally noisy? Or is noise a sign of premature wear?

Noise can be caused by so many different things, poor set-up, poor quality ring and pinion, bearings and the number one killer in this industry...abuse. But that is why we buy these parts so we can abuse them!
Take Your time, do some trouble shooting trying to pin the noise down and hopefully it will be something simple.

I agree, and in the end it may take a new set of gears. You can have two identical appearing set of gears and one can be loud and the other one quiet. Bob

what kind of trq arm ya runnin ? i know chassis mnts will channel a lot of noise thru . butttt if ya say ya cant hear your sterio over it ya deff have a problem beyond that . if its on accel id be lookin at ring and pinion make sure the yoke for the rear is tight and has no play . or drop the oil and see what it looks like . if ya dont know how to do rears id take it to someone who does , seein its its very easy to do but even easier to screw up in there

I would not drive with that much noise, I do not think pinion angle would cause that problem, but with a new install I would sure recheck it, if I were install new gears I would use a solid crush sleeve then when you get a good pattern it an't going to change
