Default Best Gearing for A4?

I have the stock 3.23's on my '00 Z28. I raced a stock ls1 trans am that just had a tune, SLP lid and catback. It was an a4 also but he has 3.42 gears in his. Well out of the hole i got him really bad up to about 100. After that it seems like my top end dies and he started passing me. My car has longtube headers, and SLP lid. Currently i have no exhaust on my car just open headers and no tune. I dont believe his top end is from the tune but i think it was from his gearing.

My question is what is a good gear ratio to run with a Cam, nitrous setup? Im thinking 228R Cam, TSP True duals, tune, slp lid and 100 shot of nitrous and 2800-3200ish stall. I love how my car is quick out of the hole but i hate the top end. I want gears that will still help me out of the hole but imporve topend aswell. Help appreciated. Thanks guys

You should have the advantage top end with the lower gear ratio. Most guys with A4's and a cam are running 3.73 gears. I had them in my car before I bought a Dana 60 with 4.10's. I really liked the 3.73 for streetability and acceleration. IMO I'd just go with that.

For stock rear, 342. There is no way I would waste money doing that swap though.

Open headers and no tune are not helping you. Do that and then run him again. I doubt gears will get you what you are wanting.

Or if you want to do it right get a converter and muder him, period.

Yeah I would say hell with gears not worth a tiny gain unless your throwing 373's or 410's. If not then go stall converter - HUGE difference!! BIG gains

For what it is worth, gearing isn't your issue in that instance. A lower gear like a 4.10 or 3.73 will make you leave harder with a greater mechanical advantage. The gearing at the top end shouldn't make much, if any, difference other than decreasing your MPH per RPM.

If you are looking for top end improvement, you need to get the car all straightened out. When you run open headers it is very easy to foul front 02's which can impair performance, and if you don't have a tune your also throwing other codes such as rear 02's and most likely AIR pump cods if you did that delete.

My prescription for you is to:

-Make your own ram air (SUX2BU) or buy a GOOD one like the chrs1313
-Port your own throttle body (easy)
-Seal everything together
-Get some kind of exhaust on the car, even if it is just some extensions off the collectors to save your 02's
-Make sure your front 02's are ok
-Get a local to tune out your rear 02's and AIR for cheap or free
-Seafoam (or your favorite alternative MCCC etc)
-Change oil
-Change plugs (and wires if necessary)
-Change fuel filter
-Clean your air filter

Then go rape your friend.. all this can be done for a $100-$150 and your top end should be noticeably better

With the 4l60e, it has an already aggressive 1st gear ratio. Adding 3.73s will make traction harder to come by, which is not good for winning races. 3.73s will give you more pull in 2nd and 3rd, which are kind of long winded gears IMO. So its kind of a trade off. I chose the 3.73s bc I wanted to shorten 2nd and 3rd.

stall it to 3200-3600 and you will tear him a new one!!!
my car with 323's pulled 10x harder when i installed my 3600 stall, i also have other mods but it was a very big noticable difference.

today i installed my 373's and with my big stall the car wants to accelerate more. BTW this was the biggest PITA EVER!!!!!!!

do a stall first you will NOT be dissapointed!

and put an exhaust on the car with cutouts if you like the wild loud sound, go with some true duals!!!!!

A stall and gears will put you on the fast track to buying drag radials too. Lol. Your gears arent causing you to lose after 100 your probably just lacking 5 or 10hp or more in the higher rpm ranges.
