Default 4.56 Gear & M6?

Is anyone running a 4.56 gear with a M6? I am getting ready to make a gear change form 4.11 to either a 4.30 or 4.56 and just wondered if anyone was using the 56 over the 4.30? It is in a 12 bolt.

Thanks in advance.

Why do you want to go to such a steep gear? Whats your plan for the car. If a street car, I'd say stick with what you got. If your trying run a 29.5" tire, then run the 4.56's.

I think the determining factor would be the size tire that you plan on running and what you are using it for. Assuming drag racing: If 26" I would stay with 4.10, 28" then 4.30 or 4.56 would be ok. Also depends how fast you trap, you don't want to be shifting into 5th in the 1/4. If its for the street, I would probably leave the 4.10's in.

I was just wondering about 4:56 myself. I found with my cam making a ton of power over 6,000 rpms I dont think that they would be a bad choice for where I drive my car. I never run 6th gear unless Im doing over 65mph which is not that often (with 3.42). Driving through town I could pull 3rd gear at 25 mphs and a lower rpm instead of higher rpm in 2nd gear. I searched for a calculator on here and found that you can punch in all your info and tell you what speed and rpm at what gear.

Alright I love my 4.56s. I ran around on stock 17 inch wheels and felt like it had way more torque than it actually does and at 70mph in 6th it was at about 2000 to 2100 RPM. Now run slicks and skinnys with a 28 tire and its down to 1900 rpm in 6th. Its great if you are staying NA. Just know when you are racing you just have to shift like a crazy person which makes it fun as hell lol.

As most people said, this is tire size dependent. 5th is not track friendly.

i also love 4.56 in an m6 & love them,i have had them in 2 cars now.....but it does depend on tire height,26" you are fine with 4.10.

28" high & the 4.56 are perfect if your under 500rwhp,any more HP & its just to much gear for the 1/4 unless you want to shift to 5th gear.....

No in car vids, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNhD64ZPkfE This video is alright I guess, The very first time down the track with this car, Never mind that weak *** burnout tires where stickier than I thought and made me look retarded also short shifted first. But love the 4.56 gear. stock clutch, granny shifting not double clutch like I should

Yea def need to heat up the tires some more zmg lol.. doesn't look like you have a linelock?

I plan on a MWC 9" with spool and 4.56s with 28" tire. You should be good in the 1/4 through 4th if your trapping under 135ish mph assuming your shifting 6500 rpm + I believe.

I don't mind mine at all, Went from 4.10's to 4.56's to pick up more RPM in the 1/4 mile. On the street there no problem as well you will and keeps you from downshifting to pass someone.

If you plan to spray nitrous stick with 4.10s but if the car is going to stay NA then there is no problem with 4.56s

hey guys, saw this thread very interesting, im running 360HP to the wheels, 3500lbs race weight, 3:89 gears on 26in slicks, 1.680 60ft, 7.709 1/8th, 12.070 1/4 @ 112.419 and im just about to redline around 6200 rpms as i cross the line...i was wanting to go with a lower gear like around a 4:30..but from what u guys are saying hitting 5th isnt a good idea...but im bogging off the line just a little with a 6k launch...so what should i do..btw more HP is soon in order with a nice H/C package so should be around the 420HP area before too long

4.10/4.11s is about the best match for 26" tires

you should have more mph left in it with only a 3.89 gear. I trap 118 with the 4.30s on a 26" MT et drag stiffwall. My limiter is at 6600 and haven't hit it yet. It's probably close though. I think if you go with 4.10's you'll be fine, but once you have more power you might need to up your limiter.

do you think a 4.30 is too low? btw im still bone stock engine so im afraid the valve springs wouldnt handle much more than 6000-6200 rpm

If bogging is your reasoning for wanting to switch I would put more air in the rear tires vs changing gears it's cheaper and will certainly help with the bogging. You just have to keep playing to find the happy point for your setup.

If your set on swapping gears I would wait until you put the H/C in and see where your new power band is so you can match the gears properly.

I have 4.56's in my 12 bolt. I love them. My street tires are only 25.5 tall which kinda sucks lol. my slicks however are 28" tall. I can deal with the streetability fine. Not a daily driver so I really don't care. 75mph with my street tires is about 2400RPM

I love my 4.30's. But it is too much gear for everyday driving. But it is perfect for my combo. I would wait til you get the heads/cam done, then see what you are trapping. That will help you select the right gear.
