Default Going with 9 Inch Rear - Narrowed or Stock Width?

Hey All,

To those of you who have aftermarket rear ends (I'm going to buy a 9 inch rear shortly), I'm wondering how you made the decision of whether to go with a narrowed unit, or stock width?

If narrowed, how do you decide how much to narrow? Is this just to accommodate 'deep dish' wheels with a big lip, or are there other reasons to narrow?

Thanks!

Went stock because I didn't have the coin for custom wheels at the time and figured I could have it shortened at a later date if I wanted to. It also keeps wheel options more open.

Only benefit to shortening it is custom wheels with bigger lips.

If the car is a driver and not a track car then stock width will be fine.

I narrow for a couple of reasons. 1 I wanted the better looking wheel and 2 It was a little bit of less weight do to shorter axles not much but its worth it to me. mine is a strip/strip car.

subtract the back space of desired rim from back space of stock rim, that should be how much you narrow each side by.

Thanks for the responses!

If you narrow the rear and decide to throw on some stock-size rims, can you just throw on some spacers to effectively widen the rear?

It seems like it would be much easier to put spacers and 'widen' the rear, than to go too wide and have to narrow it later.

What is the most popular narrow amount? I have seen a few people talk about 1.5" narrowed on each side, for a total of 3" narrow?
