410 help!

Default 410 help!

My husband would shoot me if he knew I was posting this...but...I am trying to help him and some experience would be helpful.

This is our first time installing 410 gears in our 2001 z28 Camaro. He put them in and there was a slight whining, so he took them out to get them realigned and for some reason, he says they arent lining up right at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions/helpful info...it would be much appreciated!

did you get them installed at a reputable shop or at home ? driving with the gears not aligned properly could damage things in there ..

He installed them...he only drove it down the street after he first put them in and heard the whining and hasnt drove it since. He is racking his brain trying to figure out why they arent lining up just right.

the backlash may not be set correctly, really need to check it with a dial indicator on the ring gear. Really need to be set somewhere around
.008 to .010. may need less or more shims to accomplish that. If it is in spec then the pinion could not be installed correctly

Gears are not super hard to do your self with just a little more than basic hand tools. A dial indicator is a must. One could be had for 25 or 30 dollars almost anywhere especially online. I recomend one with a magnetic base.

Your next step is to go to Randysringandpinion.com and in the downloads section download the Yukon gears instalation instructions. Read them thoroughly and understand how the setup goes.

Also if hes reusing all the factory shims and spacers instead of buying a install kit hes asking for trouble. There are no one size fits all shims and a install kit or just a variety of pinion and side shims with something to mark a wear pattern with is most necessary.

Pinion depth is crucial. Pinion depth is right then getting the pattern on the teeth with the right backlash.

No problem at all. Another tip is that those shims have no sizes marked on them and using your eyes to judge thickness only goes so far so I he has a dial caliper or something that can measure them then he can lay them in order and it will help him gauge his steps in or out.

5 must have tools.....

1. Micrometer (measuring shims)
2. Dial indicator (measuring backlash)
3. Inch pound torque meter (measuring pre-load)
4. Torque wrench (measuring torque)
6. Press or bearing press

A. If you don't have them, the cost of the labor for a professional to do it will be cheaper than buying those tools

B. If you do have them, you can take a shot

As you are witnessing i recommend A



Is it whining on accel or decel, or is it whining EVERYWHERE ?
