Default gear install gone bad?

got motive 3.73's 287 miles ago have done 9-12 heat cycles and the gears today started to whine really bad on the way home from work (8 miles). the last half i noticed it getting louder as i gave it gas and the speed increased and the last 2 miles it was loud as i was braking and got under 10 mph ...

i know gears can whine but is that also a sign that they are about to take a dump?

i have followed all the rules for the proper break in process keep it under 50mph, dont hold a constant speed for very long, stop every 15-20 miles to let gears cool for 30 - 45 min before continuing, and NO WOT ... and i know that i need to do this for 500 miles

If you are hearing whining, it's only gonna get worse.

If you have noise in less than 300 miles, don't expect it to live very long. Who set up the gears?

took in the car and the "coast side/reverse" is perfect. the yellow grease gets wiped from the center of the teeth just like it should. but going the other way the "drive side" wipes the very edge of the ring gear in the center/ inside ... can the drive side be centered up some and the coast side not change?

if not

can the drive side be centered to wipe as it should and the coast side be pushed to the outer edges of the ring gear?

noise is going to happen i know but what will make the gears last longer and not eat themselfs up?

Find an older Ford truck, or full size car shop manual. They have the best pictures for what the patterns should look like. You need to get the coast AND drive side right. Sometimes the carrier pre-load is set too loose and the ring gear will move away from the pinion under acceleration. Something to look for.

Read this:
http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...ear_Setup.html

BTW: Once the gears are noisy, they are never going to be quiet. If you drag your finger nail across the tooth you'll feel tiny ridges. That's what you're hearing.

not entirely true. ive always found, if your gears start to whine under 500 miles, it can usuallly be corrected as long as you dont keep driving it.

My Motive 3.73s have a slight whine, have since the second time I took them out and hammered on them from a 40 roll. It has never gotten worse. Just a slight whine. If it was getting worse as I drove I think I would be a little nervous.
