Default Rear end clunk

Well lately I started hearing and feeling a clunking noise from what I believe is the rear end. The problem doesn't arise until I get to about 3rd or 4th gear and when it shifts the rpm's drop to about 1500 and stay there. When I try to accelerate the rpm's rise slightly then come right back down to 1500 and the rear will start clunking and the harder I try to accelerate the more it clunks. Like said, it doesn't happen when trying to accelerate at lower speeds, as far as I know, just when it hits a certain gear. I was wondering if the pinion or ring gears were shot and if so or any other suggestions you guys may have. It's an auto by the way.
Thanks
