Default Nine inch install question

Was looking at my axles trying to figure out the exact order the backing plates bearings and shims go on in and noticed that the outter hub of the axle (with the lugs sticking out) dosent have a hole in it to access the T bolts which hold the backing plates to the housing.

Is there enough clearance to tighten these with the bearings pressed on without this hole?

There should be like an inch gap between where the studs are and where the backing plate is. The place where the e-brake shoe rides. Thats enough room to get a wrench in and put the nuts on the t-bolts.

You probably have the LT1 style backing plates which can be a real pain in the arsche. There was a thread on here where a gentlemen modified his to work, basically cutting slots in the backing plate to access the nuts. Or install LS1 backing plates and caliper.

I'll see what I can do I guess. My 9" came with no instructions. Where do the two seals go? At the end of the axles? If so they have to be on the axle when you press the bearings on?

Bob are these instructions for a drum brake setup?

Those instructions just say to install the seals, not where. I assume they go on the ends of the axles, but if so they would have to be on the axle when you pressed the bearing on, right? Since there would be no way to slide the axles in thru the seal with the bearings already pressed on.

Do the axle seals on the center of the housing near where the axles go into the center section instead?

Also, the bearings I have dont have O-rings on either side of them...should there be?

The above drawing shows the orientation. Note: The 1/8" shims are for using LT1 brakes. The bearings don't have to have the o-rings. Bob

take your time and read/undrestand the inst Bob has posted, a few point to make note:
the axles are diff size ,mount the correct backing plate on the correct axle, the 1/8 spacers are used with only LT1 plates and not with LS1 plates, the inter lube seals mount inside the axel housing besure and install them with the lip going in (some ppl do not use them IF using the bearings with the o ring- I use both) if useing the bearings with the o-ring. I think the o-ring goes next to the outside, if running 4 channel the reluctor rings will not allow you to reach threw the axle flange to tighten the t bolt- just use a open end wrench
sorry about the rambling, just want to point out the small things which may become a problem

I get that, but I wasnt sure if they ride outboard or inboard of the bearing. I think i got it figured out.

Also, are all the moser 9" housings supposed to have a fill plug standard? I ordered mine with just a drain plug since I thought it came standard with a fill plug, but there is only a drain plug.

This is crude but I think this is what you are asking for, granted this is a 4ch set up but the seal goes in the same spot.

So the seal has to be next to the backing plate when you press the bearings on, then you install it into the housing with the axle?

That is correct if you have a tapered bearing.

Example of the bearing from my crude picture.

Bearing bottom left, seal up at the top, wedding ring on the lower right.

Better yet these pictures will explain it a little better. These are very old pictures but the important thing is the series in how you put these together.

If you do not have a 4ch you skip this part.
Here is the 4ch ring, spacer, and adapter pressed into place. Notice in this picture it is silver instead of black.

Then slide on the backing plate, then the seal, and finally the bearing.

Press them into place.

Shows it in place with the silver wedding ring then pressed into place.

Bolt it all together and you are good to go.

The seals I have are much smaller than the bearings and the bearings are not tapered.

I talked to the place I got the housing from and they said the seal is installed into the housing, inboard of the bearing.

Thank you for the pictures, is the circular plate that bolts onto the backing plate for the emergency brake? is that LS1 brakes only? I dont see anything like that on the LT1 disc brake diagram on shoebox's website : or

Thanks for all the help.
