You can tighten the u bolts or retaining straps too tight, which can distort the u joint caps and damage the needle bearings. Bob

You could install a shaft with the wrong size joint and just get it in there.
You can over tighten the U-bolts and distort the cap causing the joint to wear and not oscillate on 1 axis, and/or even break needles.

Being no pinion yoke is made perfectly there may be no wrong way but one side or the other may be better for balance than the other. We recently did some testing for a NASCAR team and had a few different manufacturers pinion yokes to put up in the balancer with the shafts. you would not believe how many "top" brands are not centered properly......
