Anyone ever run a stock 9" center section?
What exactly are the downsides to it? Would it hold 500-700 rwhp?

Im running a complete stock Ford center from a 70's Mach 1. It has factory Ford 4:11 gears and a Ford Traclock posi. I got it for free from a buddy, had a RE shop check it out, he put a Daytona Pinion support on for me so I could run my billet yoke. He said the clutches (from the 70's) would pass for brand new. I have a lightly modded LS6 in an 02 M6 Camaro. Not sure on my RWHP but it was enough to murder 2 stock 10 bolts, this 9" feels bullet proof to me in comparison and the best part is it is quiet, no gear whine and no clunks. I have this installed as the Trutrac unit I bought with my housing made so much gear noise, you didn't want to drive the car, it went back for new gears. So, my plan was to use the ford center section for a temp but I will definitely keep it for a spare.
The down side for me was having to buy a big bearing support to use it with the modern yoke and 1350 U-joint. Upside would be for anyone on a budget, a stock one in good shape will get you by for a while. You can get a housing and axles for $1K, a cheap center will get you rolling well under $1500

i ran one out of a 80,s bronco . at the time i was making 4xx at the whlles and 5xx trq "on spray " and it exploded the case gears and case . was told that the case cant hold the power mostly . but like 10 bolts some live some dont just be ready for it when it does come apart .

depends on which center you get.
the nodular iron cases are a bit stronger than the cast cases. this is denoted by the "N" cast into the center directly above the yoke.
i have a nodular center section with Moser 31 spline axles, richmond 4.11 gears and a Strange spool. no problems yet launching at 6k on slicks side stepping the clutch.

my friend has a stock 9" center section, stock 31 axles, and a mini spool. Its an auto so its easier on the launch and runs mid 10's. Somewhere in the 500 hp level. Its been 2 seasons now.
