Default I think I have a problem

Just put gm 4.10's in the car this weekend. drove about 10 miles or so. I got on it about half throttle, now there is a whine while on the gas. (mostly 5th and 6th gears.)

Low gear ratio's, 3:73. 4:10 and 4:30's ect, make noise. If you get quiet ones, you got lucky. Aftermarket gears make more noise than factory gears because they are made of harder material to take abuse. You can actually read about it on the Motive website. The lower the gear ratio you have, the larger the contact patch between the pinion and ring gear, hence the whine. If they are brand new gears, they may quiet down a little but don't expect much. The noise my Motive 4:10's made in my stock housing drove me nuts.

I got 4.89's in 1 car, 4.30's in another, 4.56's in my truck, 4.10 in my other. . .. Not to mention many various others.

There is no noise.

Some richmonds make noise, however 4.10's aren't no 5.57.

Sounds like when the set up was done it was borderline and now you need to do it again . . . .

Don't get on it in only 10 miles. .

Is this the 7.5? or you got something else, some of them are a pita

Every set of 4.10s I ever installed were quiet. GM gears especially should be quiet like stock. You shouldn't have hit it after 10 miles IMO. As long as the noise isn't too bad and doesn't get any worse then you could just leave it.

You make good sense. After driving it some more, it's not as bad as I orignally thought. I will find out when I drain the fluid after some break in miles. If it's broke it will be a good excuse to get 9 inch
I think it will be fine for how and how little the car gets driven

Pull the rear cover and look at it. They should be quiet, richmonds as said before can be noisy. My motive 4.10's and 4.30's are SILENT. If the gear edges are sharp like razor blades, you need to do some adjustment. It could be that the crush collar was not torqued correctly and the pinion is moving.

jack the car up and at least check and make sure the pinion is not loose. if it did not crush while torquing it the crush sleeve probably crushed itself a little under load.

I'm going to take it a part when I have a chance, I personally tightened the pinion myself and there was no play and it was set to 25 inch pounds. the only thing we noticed is the back lash was a thousands tighter than spec. I have put about 40 miles on it since and the noise is really only between 53 and 60 mph.

Not to hijack, but what do you guys consider to be noisey? I had 3.73s isntalled recently and there's a slight whine in the high gears, but it's not too loud. Think if Itook it back to the shop it could be corrected?

I've had 2 sets of Richmonds, both whined. The 3.90's I'm running right now whine like a sum bitch.

I consider any rear that I can hear over a walbro to be noisy.

After a few hundred miles I drained the fluid and put fresh in. I have done a few smoke shows, the noise is getting very quiet and holding together. I am not concerned at all any more.
