9 inch or 12 bolt. what options?
Im really getting tired of reading about everything and getting kinda confused. Im in the market for a rearend for my car. It is a 99 camaro 6 speed with a ms4 cam and full boltons. it makes a little over 400hp or so. I have a 10 bolt with the stock 3.42 in it now and that coupled with the big cam making no low end torque it makes it not very fun to drive. It is mostly driven on the street but is not my daily driver. It will be taken to the track occasionally and beat on. it is a 4 channel rearend so i will need to add that option. I am tight on money but am really wanting to upgrade the rear. I would consider a used one but am just afraid of buying someone elses junk. What are your opinions on a rearend choice and what options and gear would you recommend for my setup and who has the best prices? Thanks for the help!

12 bolt is cheaper and should hold great. You can always go S60 too for same price. Some sponsors to the right would be glad to help ya out. As far as gear I would go 4.10 all day so you have that get off the line SOTP feeling - you won't feel much with 3.73 with your set up. GL man!
Why not to get a 12 bolt:
You can have a 12 bolt in an early Chevelle, Nova, Camaro, etc, and beat the snot out of it and not hurt anything. Put a 12 bolt into a late model f body that uses a torque arm, make a couple 4000 to 5000 rpm launches at the dragstrip, and I can just about guarantee you'll have a lot more gear noise on the way home. The torque arm seems to distort the housing on the 12 bolts, and it seems to happen to all the brands of 12 bolt rears. This does not happen to the 9 inch rears, and there is no price difference between the 12 bolt and nine inch rears. As the horsepower in our engines keep escalating, most people these days go straight to the nine inch rear. The 9-inch has an internal rear-pinion support that also supports the gear end of the pinion to limit gear deflection under high torque loads. This seems to be the major reason why the 9 inch doesn't start whining after high rpm clutch dumps, when the 12 bolt will pick up noise. The 9-inch locates its pinion gear lower on the ring gear to improve tooth contact, better the 12 bolt does. The 9-inch also has a 0.125-inch larger ring-gear diameter and internal pinion support than the 12 bolt.
For a 4 channel car with the OP's spec's I would go with the Moser 9 inch with the Trac-Loc.

We can get you into a MWC fabricated nine inch that will bolt back into your car the same way the 10-bolt came out for $2975 and that will include the following items. MWC housing, MWC torque arm and cross member of your choice, assembled center section using a iron case and a rebuildable billet clutch posi with gear ratio of your choice, and the axles set up for 4ch. Slap on your brakes, 4ch rings and put it together and you have a great little package.
I'll be in the market for a rear end this fall/winter. Hoping this 10-bolt lasts me until then!
What is the pros & cons of a fabricated 9" housing versus a 'regular' housing setup? How close in price are they with similar components?

The Moser fabricated rear is called the M9, and it comes with an awesome chromoly torque arm and chromoly crossmember, plus it automatically comes with an extra large fill and a drain plug. It is basically the same weight as the 10 bolt rear, but when ordered with the optional backbrace, can handle all the power you can put to it. It is more money than the standard Moser nine inch, but when you factor in the torque arm and crossmember that come with it, it ends up being about the same price as if you bought the standard Moser nine inch, and then bought a good torque arm and a crossmember to get the torque arm off the transmission. The Moser rears ship just two days after the order is received, making them the fastest in the industry. Bob

There is no cons at all at looking at a fabricated housing especially if you look at the MWC fabricated nine inch that is in the same price frame as all other stamped housings on the market.
